Unseriousness will cost you dearly
I have never been a fan of TikTok, nor do I use it. The few minutes I spent on it convinced me that there was nothing there for me. It’s not an app where you can communicate something deep, profound and time-consuming, not because the platform is inherently incapable, but because of the way people expect to use it. I found the same thing on YouTube, with the Shorts feature. The videos are silly, uninformative and made only to titillate or shock people at first glance. There are nice long-form videos on YouTube, of course. Documentaries of all kinds may be found on it, so at least there are some people who watch YouTube in order to learn something new.
However, the vast majority of content produced these days is made mostly for the sake of entertainment. Pornography, stupid videos of people failing at doing something, or even movies that lack depth, perspective and consequence are everywhere. The last serious movie that I ever saw was probably the Lord of the Rings trilogy-even the Hobbit series utterly failed to live up to its predecessor. However, even the LOTR movies are extremely problematic. I don’t have time to go into detail on every movie, of course. But there is something common to all these modes, plus others including music, theater, broadway and such. They are all extremely unserious.
What unseriousness means and why it matters
There used to be a time when stories were told in order to communicate, enlighten and uplift. The lack of durable media meant that we had to create narratives in order to remember and those narratives needed to be memorable. But most importantly, we wanted to say something serious about life-about what happened to someone, what they did, how they got through, and so on. In other words, stories were deeply human and meaningful.
Today, story-telling is no longer about the human condition. Sure, people still write novels about difficult topics or tell stories about triumph over challenging situations or even take a journalistic point of view and report on a situation. And occasionally a movie is made (e.g. Arrival starring the beautiful Amy Adams), that attempts to convey something about life. But all of them get it wrong overall, i.e. they lie, and the conclusions that are made in every movie, novel, play, etc. about life are totally wrong. You may think I am being over-critical, but I am simply pointing out the truth: unenlightened human beings only tell lies, because the only thing they can do, is confess their lies.
“An unenlightened individual cannot speak the truth. They can only confess their falsehoods.”
Unseriousness means that a person has given up on trying to find the truth, and is instead seeking to profit off of their stupidity, lies and confusion. This kind of thing is very pervasive on social media, where most people lie most of the time and try to get as many clicks or views as possible. This is not the fault of social media, nor is it the fault of corporations or tech firms. This is actually the culmination of a deeply problematic situation that has been worsening for a long time: faithlessness.
“Unserious people are deeply faithless. They have given up.”
You can recognize unserious people very easily: they are always laughing or smirking at something, but they lack all happiness and peace. It is a cynical way of living, one that says “I am alone and I cannot help myself, so I might as well destroy the place”. It is a toxic masculinity, but it has infected girls and women as well. Women on the Internet are often engaged in very stupid, frivolous and inappropriate behavior. It is self-destructive to the max, as they constantly diminish or sell their femininity (or whatever little is left of it), for a pretty penny or a bit of attention. I am not just talking about pornography, but also about every single woman in popular media nowadays. They are living really destructive lives while also using up resources that could be put to better use.
What does seriousness look like?
As easy as it is to recognize unserious people, it is equally easy to spot the serious ones: they are usually quiet. The reason they are quiet is simple: they know that they don’t understand life. They are still trying to figure things out. They know that whatever they say, there is always some situation where their conclusions will be proven wrong. So it’s best to stay silent and wait for an answer.
I remember when I was young, that for the first 33 years of my life, I barely spoke. I hated talking to people, especially on the phone or virtually, because I could never really fully sense the energy of people I was communicating with and therefore, couldn’t really understand them! Not only that, but I had had my first spiritual experience when I was 6 years old and I hadn’t fully made sense of it yet. I didn’t know exactly what was going on in my life-only that something inside was still “cooking”, so to speak. I hadn’t finished processing, assimilating and understanding what I had experienced, so there was nothing to say. And because I was so occupied with trying to figure out this thing within me, I had no space or time for anyone else. I just wanted to be alone for as long as possible and just wait until the answer came.
To this day, I function like this. Until I understand what I must do, I just sit, motionless, unable to move or speak. I have to understand fully before I can make a move. This is something the Divine Feminine has done to me. She silenced me, turned me into someone that cannot do anything unless it is clear. So I am very serious, all the time!
Does this mean that I don’t laugh or joke or enjoy myself? On the contrary, I can laugh, joke and enjoy myself precisely because I have figured out something about life. I understand deeply because the Divine Feminine has given me the understanding, not by speaking to me, but by putting me through all kinds of experiences, even ones that yogis typically do not receive. I am not bragging, but telling you what my role is: to communicate the ineffable, the spiritual, the hidden, in the context of the world in which we all live (in addition to the energy work).
Monks that live in monasteries, as well as yogis that live in caves and such, do not possess this kind of understanding, even though spiritually they may have a lot of knowledge. They cannot help you understand your life in a way that I can. In fact, monks are usually not serious-out of the millions of monks, may be one or two succeed in any given lifetime, while the rest simply serve and perish, having never achieved the goal. This is why monks are usually asked to stick to their gurus teachings and not share anything else, while I am here commenting on just about everything under the sun.
The cost of being unserious
It’s really very simple: if you take life seriously, you will go towards truth, beauty and love. If you don’t take life seriously, you will keep sinking into darkness, ignorance, stupidity and selfishness. A lot of people wish to tell you that you shouldn’t take life too seriously. These are the worst people on the planet: they push other people towards darkness. In fact, you must take life as seriously as possible. You must always ask yourself what is happening and why. At the end of the day, you will not find the same narratives that I have. Your narrative will be different, your words different, your point of view different but it will never contradict anything I have ever said. You will discover something new about life that I have not, because you will have lived a different life, and will have had different experiences.
I am not telling you to cook up stories about your life. You don’t do that. In fact, the words will come to you long after you’ve had an experience of enlightenment. When I say long, I mean decades. Let me give you an example.
In South India, there was a swami named Ramana Maharshi. He had an enlightenment experience when he was around 16 years old. After that, it took him 20 years to make sense of, find the right understanding and come up with the words to explain to other people what he had understood. And he was a great yogi-one of the most enlightened people that has ever lived on this planet! If it took him 20 years, you can be sure it will take you a while longer.
Until then, you must be as quiet as possible.
